MICHAEL DUNN on the origins of the group:
"The Hot Club of Mars is a direct descendant of The Kitsilano Kat Kickers, one of the first groups to play hot swing around Vancouver, BC, in the late 70s. Having gone through an enormous body of musical alumni since then, the present band still does "Gypsy Jazz".
"Our musical scope has widened considerably from the original format to include tangos, some original songs, and a completely reworked version of a favourite Django classic, Douce Ambience. Our gifted chanteuse, Deanna Knight, has brought some of her own creations to the group which have evolved somewhat here from her original concepts.
"So our present live concert repertoire represents a confluence of several different genres, all of which have contributed to the eclectic mix on our new CD, Gypsy Fire."

For Wawau the music of his people has energy and fire, but it is also very important for his approach to the guitar to express melancholy, nostalgia and elegance. Wawau considers tone, phrasing and dynamics to be crucial for a good guitarist.

The band was founded originally as the Tolga Emilio Trio by Tolga During in Amsterdam in 1998. One year later, they recorded their first album which was internationally much applauded. As a result they received invitations from national and international festivals. Ever since, they have recorded five more albums and a live dvd. They now peform as a Quartet and the bandmembers now all live in Italy but continue to perform all over the world.

The Faux Frenchmen are acoustic guitarists Brian Lovely and George Cunningham, acoustic bassist Don Aren, and violinist Paul Patterson. We’ve been playing 1930’s Hot Club-inspired string band gypsy jazz in and around Cincinnati since September 2002.
Guitarist Django Reinhardt and violin virtuoso Stephane Grappelli comprised the first, and most influential generation of European jazz musicians. They fronted the Quintette of the Hot Club of France from 1934 to 1939. The Hot Club blended their backgrounds in traditional gypsy and European popular music with the new sounds of American artists like Duke Ellington, Fats Waller and Louis Armstrong to create a new genre, often called "gypsy jazz."
Rather than taking a Hot Club “tribute” band approach, we Frenchmen adapt the Hot Club’s instrumentation and style to our own musical ends, re-incorporating American influences and accents to suit our whim.
What you end up with is a gypsy swing version of the “Spiderman” cartoon theme

Gypsy Swing Revue is a jazz ensemble that carries on the tradition of Gypsy Jazz created by Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli during their domination of the Paris jazz scene during the 1930’s.
The “Hot Club” style of jazz is ideal for all occasions; from nightclubs to swing dances to elegant dinner parties and weddings.
The music of Gypsy Swing Revue is the Swinging Jazz of the 30’s and 40’s plus a cross-section of songs from the modern Gypsy Jazz repertoire. With instrumentation similar to Django’s Hot Club, namely: two acoustic guitars, upright bass, and violin, each Gypsy Swing Revue performance provides exciting, engaging music for all to enjoy

Hot Club of Detroit finds its inspiration from the famous Quintette Du Hot Club du France made famous by jazz guitar pioneer Django Reinhardt and violin master Stephane Grappelli. Pioneered by founder Evan Perri, this exciting, young ensemble includes a lead acoustic guitar, two rhythm acoustic guitars, clarinet, chromatic button accordion, and stand-up string bass. Hot Club Of Detroit combines their decidedly modern edge with the classic European jazz of the 30s to create a new form of Gypsy fire!

“For the Django fanatics, there’s not a finer gypsy jazz band than One Leg Up.” (Hunter Pope Mountain Xpress, Jun 7, 2006) One Leg Up--John Stineman (guitar & vocal), Jim Tanner (guitar), Daniel Coolik (mandolin, guitar, & electric mandolin), Mike Guzalak (clarinet, tenor saxophone, & vocal), Cary Fridley (bass & vocal), and Steve Trismen (violin)--released their first album Gypsy Blue in 2004. About their first record, Vintage Guitar Magazine wrote “One Leg Up plays Gypsy jazz with conviction... the solos come fast and furious from their two solo guitarists, mandolinist, and clarinetist.” That same year they accompanied Spanish gypsy jazz guitarist Pere Soto while he toured the U.S. May, 2005, they did a concert/book show with Michael Dregni author of the new acclaimed biography Django: The Life and Music of a Gypsy Legend. Also, in that year, their live version of “Tico Tico” was put on WNCW-FM’s Crowd Around the Mic Volume 9, a compilation of the best music recorded live on WNCW that year.
Their second record, Pere Lachaise, released on Bastille Day of 2006 found One Leg Up playing in an energetic yet new direction. Though the album contains elements from their first, such as a few Django Reinhardt compositions and some jazz tunes for the Tin Pan Alley days, this new album welcomes the addition of Cary Fridley on bass and vocals, some electric guitar and mandolin work, and newly fashioned, fresh arrangements of lesser known standards. One Leg Up works within the gypsy jazz instrumentation and framework while bringing different styles of jazz, Latin, and original music into their identity. They perform through out the Southeast U.S. at festivals, concerts, clubs, dance events, and any place where the music lovers appreciate the sensual energy of a tight jazz ensemble.
